Spencer Gavin Smith - Medieval Parks, Gardens & Landscapes Specialist
Spencer Gavin Smith has been an archaeologist and surveyor for over 20 years. He is currently writing a book entitled 'Medieval Parks, Gardens and Landscapes: Their archaeology and history in England and Wales' for Pen & Sword Books. His research specialisms include the creation of parks, gardens and designed landscapes in England and Wales c.900 - c.1450; the development of the discipline of medieval archaeology in Wales in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the archaeology of post-medieval extractive industries, particularly in relation to European trade relations.
Spencer currently works as a Contract Compliance Officer for Wrexham County Borough Council, undertaking building surveys on social housing stock as part of the Welsh Housing Quality Standard introduced by Welsh Government in 2002. Previously Spencer was Archaeology and Monuments Officer for the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, and prior to that was a Project Officer / Portable Antiquities Scheme Trust Liaison Officer for the Gwynedd Archaeological Trust. He was an Investigator with the Royal Commission for the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales on the ERDF Atlanterra project and was the researcher and archaeologist for the BAFTA Cymru nominated television series Tywysogion (Princes). Spencer has also worked as archaeologist for the commercial archaeological companies L-P: Archaeology, Oxford Archaeology North and Earthworks Archaeology, and as a land surveyor for Exploration Associates and for Powers and Tiltman Ltd.
Spencer is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and an Associate Member of the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates. He is a Trustee for the Association for Industrial Archaeology and a member of the board of Trustees for the Spode Museum Trust, Stoke-on-Trent.
